The emergence of the choir students at the Hillside Intermediate School was seen—and certainly heard—when the school’s Spring Chorus Concerts were presented.
Three overall performances were held under the direction of Hillside’s passionate Co-Directors of Hillside’s Choral and Music program, Tony Sgro and Danielle Kida.
The 5th Grade Chorus Concert was held on the evening of Tuesday, May 12, followed by the combined efforts of the 5th and 6th Grade Choirs, who performed during a morning school-wide assembly on Thursday, May 14. The 6th Graders then capped the week with their performance on Thursday night, May 14.
All the shows were presented to attentive audiences in the Hillside gymnasium.
Mr. Sgro spoke about how the students grew throughout their careers at Hillside.
“The spring chorus concerts are always one of my favorite moments of the school year because they show the incredible growth our students have made; not only as singers, but as confident young people who are willing to share their voices with our school community,” Mr. Sgro revealed.
He further explained the performances.
“This year’s theme, ‘Dreams Take Flight,’ celebrates imagination, courage, friendship, identity, and the joy of singing together. Our students brought that theme to life with so much energy, heart, and pride.”
“One of the most beautiful things about choral music is that it gives students the chance to belong to something larger than themselves,” he said.
Mr. Sgro was thrilled with how both grades teamed together during the day assembly on May 14.
“When more than 300 students sing together, they create something powerful, and you can feel that in the room.”
