Dear Hillside Family:

On behalf of the entire Hillside School staff, welcome to the 2022-2023 school year! Classes will begin on Wednesday, September 7th, with a full day of in-person instruction. Please see the Regular Day Schedule, and the District Calendar.  Your child’s individual schedule may be obtained using the PowerSchool Parent Portal scheduled to open for parents on August 26th. (The new Powerschool Parent Portal URL is https://bridgewater-raritan.powerschool.com/public)

Research on learning clearly demonstrates that student achievement is greatest when parents are positively involved in their children’s education. While it’s important to keep abreast of your child’s academic progress, it is equally as important to build strong, trusting relationships with your child’s teachers. To begin this process, please familiarize yourself with PowerSchool, our online Parent Portal, to obtain your child’s schedule and bus information, complete the required forms, monitor their academic progress, and view other pertinent information. Please note that teacher assignments are subject to revision. You may also view our teacher webpages and during the school year, review your student’s homework through the Homework Portal.  

Hillside Open House

Hillside’s Open House is on Tuesday, August 30th.  Our new fifth grade students are welcome to tour the school from 10am to 12pm that day. Sixth grade students who are new to our school will be able to tour the school from 1pm to 3pm that day. Sixth grade students who were at Hillside last year do not need to attend. Please note that teachers will not be here that day ).

Opening of School 

  • Our first day of school is Wednesday, September 7, 2022 starting at 9:15 am. Please be sure that your child is aware of their homeroom teacher/room for the first day of school. Staff will be positioned outside and throughout the building to help your child find their classroom. 

  • Student Contact and Demographic information must be verified before the start of school. This can be done through PowerSchool. Once you log in, select the “Demographic Change” link. You do not have to print any of the information – simply complete changes online.  

    • Update information that is no longer correct. Note that any changes to name or address must be done through the Central Registration Office. Documentation will be required.

    • There are “check-off boxes” to use indicating that you have read the Student Handbook, Weapons Agreement, Hillside Integrated Pest Management Plan, Acceptable Student Use of Computers and Computer Networks, Electronic Communication and Recording Devices Policy, as well as the STAR Parent-Student handbook.

    • Additionally, there is a section to complete regarding permissions for identifying students in district publications.

    • Student Health Insurance information is needed. (A telephone number is provided for the NJ Family Care program that offers free to low cost health insurance for uninsured children and certain low income parents.)

Note that all required check-off items must be completed before you can successfully “submit” the information. 

  • Please see the Required Forms and Due Dates checklist at the end of this letter for a list of all of the necessary paperwork.

  • Student Agendas will be distributed during the first month of school. The Student Handbook is included for reference on the Hillside website as well.


  •  It is helpful for you to visit our Hillside school website regularly. There you will find links to a variety of forms, documents, and valuable school information.

  • As a “green school district” we communicate to our families via an e-blast.  In order to minimize the constant flow of e-mail, we will be sending pertinent school information via our e-blast system on Wednesdays of each week. PTO correspondence will be sent on Mondays.

  • The School Messenger calling system will be used to notify you not only about school closures, emergency early dismissal, and delayed openings, but also any busing delays that significantly affect morning pickup or after school dismissal. Current users are asked to review their information and make updates as needed. Please use the quick link above and refer to the Emergency Closing Information provided. 

Arrival & Dismissal

Parents driving their students to school may begin dropping students off beginning at 9:00 AM as directed by the staff members on duty. You will have from 9:00 until 9:15  (15 minute timeframe) to drop off your child. We ask for your patience and flexibility as we try to make this process run as smoothly as possible. **Please assist us in limiting the traffic and congestion in our parking lot by using our district buses. If you do choose to drive your child to school, please drive slowly and cautiously in and around our Hillside parking area. Your patience in this process is appreciated.  Thank you!**

Morning Parent Drop-Off

  • Car riders will form two lines upon entering the school property.

  • Grade 5 parents will stay to the right and proceed to the driveway directly in front of the school.

  • Grade 6 students (and those with Grade 5 siblings) will stay to the left upon entering the school lot and proceed to the drop off-location on the first driveway.

  • All students must exit their cars from the passenger side as cars and buses may be passing on the left side (driver’s side).

  • Students may exit their vehicles beginning at 9:10 am (upon guidance of staff on duty).

  • Grade 5 students (Car Riders) will enter the building on the first floor.  Students will be guided to the outdoor stairs leading to the first floor.  Staff members will be prominently positioned to guide all students to their homeroom.

  • Grade 6 students (Car Riders) will enter the building on the second floor.  

After School Parent Pick-Up:

  • Grade 5 parents/guardians picking up their student will stay to the right and proceed to the driveway directly in front of the school.  Grade 6 parents/guardians (and those with Grade 5 siblings) will stay to the left upon entering the school lot and proceed to the pick up location on the first driveway.


  • Students may not eat or drink on the bus.

  • Students are to follow all bus conduct guidelines as outlined in the student handbook.

  • Please use the “demographics” tab on Powerschool to access your child’s transportation information, which will be available in late August..

  • Please be sure that your child knows their bus number for dismissal.

  • Students should arrive at their assigned bus stop 10 minutes prior to the scheduled pick up time. Please remind your child that seatbelts are required.

Students being dropped off after 9:15am must be signed in at the Main Office by their parent/guardian.


  • When a student is absent from school, the parent/guardian must notify Hillside before 8:30 a.m. You may email the school at: HillsideAbsences@brrsd.k12.nj.us, use the attendance reporting link on our website, or you may call 908-231-1905, choose option 2, and leave a message. Include the child’s name, teacher, expected return date, and reason for absence in your message. If you notify Hillside by telephone, a note explaining the child’s absence must be emailed to the Guidance Secretary, Mrs. Rudy, at nrudy@brrsd.org.  Notes must be received within 5 days of the absence.  The Hillside Absence Email Account is monitored in the morning prior to 9:45 am.  Any messages to school after that time must be through the Main Office at 908-231-1905.


Healthy lunches are available for purchase every school day. Please see the attached information about the  Cafeteria Point of Sale System using mypaymentsplus.com, and the Intermediate School Price List.  The lunch menu can be found here.

Families may submit an application for Free & Reduced-Price School meals.   A new application must be submitted every school year, even if your family has been approved in past years.

Student Chromebooks 

6th Grade Students must bring their District-issued chromebook with them to school on the first day.  5th Grade Students will receive their chromebooks during their first scheduled computer class. Please see the attached letter regarding students’ district-issued chromebooks, and purchasing chromebook insurance.  Please review the  Chromebook Responsible Use Handbook.

Chromebooks are equipped with a combo headphone/microphone connection, located on the side of the device. When selecting a headset please ensure that it is a headset that uses only one trrs connector like the image below:

Another option would be to use a USB headset. Although Bluetooth headsets will work, we do not recommend them because of connectivity and battery issues.

Free/Reduced Lunch

Please use this link to open the Food Services – applications page. Select the Free and Reduced Lunch buttons. Information is included in both English and Spanish.

Because health insurance is important to children’s well-being, Medicaid and NJ FamilyCare will be told if your child/children are eligible for free or reduced price meals.  You must indicate on the included form if you do not wish that information to be shared.

Student Accident Insurance

Optional student accident insurance is available through Bollinger Specialty Group. Please see the District Website for information regarding this insurance.
